Here’s a freeing thought. We don’t serve a God that is working from a checklist. For those who have accepted the call of Christ you are now living in a completely different reality. There is no ledger of your wrongs. It could be easy to live each day to its end and then look back and weigh your life on a balance of your rights and wrongs living constantly to try and get the balance to land on the side of right to gain some type of worth. The Bible teaches us about a different reality completely.
“Little children, make sure no one deceives you; the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous” (1 John 3:7)
Have you ever been on a team of any type, whether it be in sports or some other job where you knew your margin of error was less than zero? It makes your ability to grow and learn just about impossible. If you are worried about striking out and being moved to the end of the batting order, or missing the shot at the buzzer and getting benched, or pitching something outside the box for a project and getting kicked off the team then there is no joy in learning and growing. The fear of failure is paralyzing.
God wants a different life for us as believers. He starts with a completely different beginning. He says from the beginning, Jesus has already removed your short-comings and your failures, so you begin with a win and no matter if you stumble you get to keep at it. It doesn’t matter if you don’t measure up because I’ve removed the measure that you could have never reached to begin with. We immediately want to start laying out qualifying statements to somehow put the burden back on us, but that is not message of Christ. The life we live after we can understand this looks completely different because it’s a response to a righteousness that we can’t fathom.
“…the one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous” (1 John 3:7)
